About the hosts
Jake Harper and Lauren Bavis are award-winning reporters for Side Effects Public Media, a radio reporting collaborative focused on public health and policy based at WFYI in Indianapolis.
Jake started his job in 2015 shortly before the announcement of an HIV outbreak in southern Indiana, and since then has focused his reporting on addiction, Medicaid and access to health care. His investigations have covered medical industry influence in state and national government, a clinical trial that skirted federal regulations and various barriers to evidence-based addiction treatment. His stories have been broadcast at stations across the Midwest and nationally on NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Latino USA and Here & Now. In his spare time, Jake makes music and candles.
Lauren moved to Indiana in 2012, where she began her career as a print journalist. She reported on health and social services for The Herald-Times newspaper in Bloomington. Her work has been recognized by the Indiana chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists and Associated Press Media Editors, the Indiana Associated Press Broadcast Association and the Hoosier State Press Association. She graduated from Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she majored in journalism and new media. Right now, Lauren is probably reading a book or petting her dog. Preferably at the same time.
